Essential Tips for Moms Traveling with Kids this Summer
Hello, fellow moms! As summer begins in just two weeks here in Houston, TX, many of us are gearing up for exciting road trips with our little ones. Traveling with kids can be an adventure in itself, and it's essential to be well-prepared to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. Here are three major tips that I’ve found invaluable when hitting the road with my three boys. I hope these tips help make your travels memorable and stress-free!
1. Prepare Engaging Road Trip Activities
Keeping the kids entertained during a long drive is crucial to maintaining your sanity 😆 and ensuring a peaceful journey. Here are some engaging activities that can keep your kids busy:
Activity Books and Coloring Kits: Stock up on activity books, coloring kits, and sticker books. They are great for keeping little hands busy and minds engaged.
Travel Games: Classic games like "I Spy," "20 Questions," or travel bingo can be a fun way to pass the time and keep everyone entertained.
Audio Books and Music: Download a few audiobooks or create a playlist of your kids’ favorite songs. Audiobooks can be a fantastic way to keep them engrossed in a story, and a good sing-along playlist can lift everyone’s spirits.
Recently, I visited Target and found some inexpensive gems that my kids love. The Paw Patrol On-the-Go Clip Activity Set, Dinosaur Scratch Art, and a Game Book have been absolute lifesavers on our trips.
2. Invest in Portable DVD Players or Tablets
When the car games and activities run their course, a portable DVD player or tablet can be a lifesaver. Here’s why:
Variety of Entertainment: Load them up with movies, TV shows, and educational content that your kids love. This variety can keep them entertained for hours.
Breaks the Monotony: Sometimes, kids just need a break from car games and coloring. Watching a favorite movie can provide a nice change of pace and help them relax.
Headphones for Quiet Time: Don’t forget the headphones! They ensure that the kids can enjoy their shows without disturbing the driver or other passengers.
I purchased my portable DVD player from Micro Center, and the Insignia brand has been fantastic. Some of the DVDs my kids enjoy watching are from the Superbook series, which offer great stories and valuable lessons.
3. Plan Frequent Breaks and Include Fun Stops
Long drives can be tough on kids (and adults). Planning frequent breaks and including fun stops along the way can make the journey much more enjoyable.
Rest Stops: Plan to stop every couple of hours to let the kids stretch their legs, use the restroom, and burn off some energy.
Scenic Stops and Attractions: If possible, include a few interesting attractions or scenic stops in your itinerary. A short hike, a visit to a local park, or even a roadside diner can break up the monotony of the drive and give everyone something to look forward to.
Snacks and Hydration: Keep a cooler with healthy snacks and drinks handy. Kids (and adults) can get cranky when they’re hungry or thirsty, so having a variety of snacks can help keep everyone happy.
Traveling with kids can be challenging, but with a little preparation and some thoughtful planning, it can also be incredibly rewarding. I hope these tips help you have a fantastic road trip this summer. Safe travels, and enjoy every moment of your adventure with your little ones!
