Boosting Homeschooling Success: Extracurricular Activities

Embracing Extracurriculars: A Homeschooling Game-Changer

We recently signed up for our local YMCA’s PE program, and let me tell you, it’s been fantastic! I have three boys, and it’s been a joy to watch the kids engage in physical education, not just in the usual run-around-the-park way but in a structured, enriching environment.

More Than Just Exercise - Building Skills for Life

The boys are not only getting their hearts pumping and burning off that endless energy (which, let's be honest, is a win for any parent 🏃‍♂️), but they're also gaining so much more. The program has become a cornerstone for them in building new friendships, which is crucial, especially in a homeschool setting. It's heartwarming to see them interact, share laughs, and work together in teams. They're learning essential teamwork skills, like cooperation, communication, and mutual respect, which go beyond the physical aspect of the program. These are life skills that they'll carry with them. The YMCA PE program has truly been a holistic experience for our kids, contributing not just to their physical well-being, but their social and emotional development too. It’s one of those decisions as a homeschooling parent that you pat yourself on the back for making!

The Unexpected 'me time'

Another cool aspect of the YMCA’s PE program, which I absolutely love, is the unexpected 'me time' it offers. When I drop off the kids for their session, I get an hour just for me. It’s like a mini-vacation in the middle of the day! 🤣

While the kids are happily engaged and burning off their energy, I get the chance to do something for myself. Sometimes, I take a peaceful jog around the nearby track, enjoying a moment of tranquility. It's not just a physical activity for me; it's a mental refresh, a way to clear my head and recharge.

On other days, I might dive into a good book. It's a luxury, really, to read uninterrupted without the usual chorus of "Mom, look at this!" or "Mom, I need help!" in the background.

Or, I use this time to catch up on some work. With my laptop open, coffee in hand, and a quiet environment, I can be incredibly productive. This uninterrupted hour lets me focus and tick things off my to-do list, which is a huge relief and a big part of keeping our homeschool life organized and balanced.

This hour at the YMCA is simply rejuvenating. It balances the scales of personal and parenting time, allowing me to return to my kids refreshed and ready to embrace the rest of our day together. This little slice of 'me time' has become something I cherish and look forward to during our weekly routine.
